Fabric Flower Tutorial - CREE

I had an idea for a new flower design. I think it looks like a pansy, and it turned out great! Therefore, I must share!

Start by creating a template. I quarter folded a small piece of
cardstock and cut my petal shape on the folded corner.
Unfolded, the template resembles a bone.
Cut FOUR. Then singe the edges with a flame.
This not only seals the edges of the fabric, but you can
shape and smooth the places that didn't quite cut out right.
Place two of them perpendicular to one another.
Do the same with the other set.
Place one set on top of the other set, off center of each other.
You want to be able to see the bottom set between the petals
of the top set.
Place your button in the center and sew through all layers.
I like to use embroidery thread for this step.
Finished flower... very simple and easy to make. Attach to an
alligator clip, headband, or brooch.

Fabric Flower Tutorial - CHEYENNE

Some time ago, I purchased a fabric flower headband for my daughter. Yesterday as I was looking at the flower, I said to myself... I can make this!! So what follows is the outline of how I made my version of this flower...
The pink is the purchased flower, the green is the one I made.

I started by choosing my fabric... this green fabric is a firmer fabric that I already knew would not curl up when I singed the edges. I then made two different card stock templates:
One template in the shape of an elongated heart... I cut 20.
Second template is a shortened heart,
but almost straight across the top... I cut 4.
After I cut out all the pieces, I lightly singed the edges. I did not want
them to curl, only to seal the fabric to prevent fraying.
I set aside the four smaller pieces.
For the 20 longer pieces, I curled the sides around to the front.
I decided I needed to sew this flower instead of glue. I used 2 strands
of embroidery thread and placed a single stitch at the bottom
of each petal to hold the folds in place.
I chained ten of the petals together then brought them into a circle by chaining
the first petal to the tenth before I knotted and cut my thread.
I did the same with the second group of ten,
and now there are two of these.
I flipped one of them over and glued it to a felt circle.
Then I glued the second set of ten petals on top of the first set
of ten petals, staggering the petals a bit.
For the four smaller petals, I stitched them together in a four-leaf clover pattern.
Then I sewed on a large center bead.
And finally I sewed the center to the rest, bringing the thread down through that
felt circle and pulling it tight so the bead would be seeded into the flower.
This flower would look great on a stretchy headband,
a standard headband, a hat, or by itself.
I'll probably put it on an alligator clip to be used on a hat or by itself.

Fabric Flower Tutorial - SARAH

I have been having a lot of fun making fabric flowers for my girls' hair, and I've been putting them on the hats I've been learning to crochet. I've even sold a few. The flowers I've made until now have come from ideas gleaned from tutorials I've found on the Internet. But now I've designed my own flower (at least I've not seen another like it). And I'd love to share it with you!

I started out by drawing a petal onto a piece of card stock to use as my template. My petal is about 2.5" long.
My template. You can see I decided it needed to be bigger than my original drawing.

Next I cut out six of these petals. I used a silky, but not too flimsy, fabric. I also cut a felt 1.5" circle to serve as my base.

Next I cut four circles of different sizes: 2.5", 2.25", 2", and 1.5" (as I began to put it together, I added one more 3" circle). It was a work in progress. Later, I'm going to decide I don't like the green fabric.

The next step is to singe the edges of all the pieces. This seals the fabric to prevent fraying, but it also curls the fabric to make it more three-dimensional.
Barely hold the fabric to the flame, moving along the fabric, and let the edges melt and curl a bit. It's best to get the blue part of the flame, as on lighter color fabrics, that is supposed to prevent blackening of the fabric. If you've chosen the wrong fabric, it will immediately catch on fire. Usually the silky type fabrics will work the best.

Once you've singed all the pieces to your liking, you can assemble the flower. It was at this point that I decided I did not like the green. Mostly because that particular fabric did not curl to my liking.

I found some different fabrics and cut five more circles, and I was very happy with the outcome. The next step is to hot glue (or fabric glue would work, I'm sure) the six petals to the felt circle.

Next stack the five circles together with your button center and sew those pieces together. You could glue if you want, but I like the look of the thread in the button. Then glue it to the base of petals.
For this flower, I found a half-sphere bead that I glued to the center after I sewed the five circles together.

Now this flower is ready for placement on a headband, a hat, or an alligator clip.

"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you?" Matthew 6:28-30
